Philippine Embassy to Issue New Machine Readable Passports in Singapore on 01 June 2008

Filed under: Embassy Press Releases — admin @ 12:00 am

The Philippine Embassy in Singapore will start accepting applications for the new Machine-Readable Passports (MRP) starting 1 June 2008. The issuance of the MRP is in compliance with the requirement of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for all countries to issue Machine-Readable Passports not later than 01 April 2010.

In response to the ICAO directive, the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will be phasing-out the green passport and has instructed all its regional passport offices and foreign service posts, including the Philippine Embassy in Singapore, to begin issuing the MRP.

The DFA has launched the maroon-colored MRP since last year at its main office in Manila, in regional consular offices throughout the country, and in Hong Kong, where it was first pilot-tested. The DFA is also now issuing machine-readable diplomatic and official passports for Philippine diplomats and government officials.

Because the processing time for the passport is six (6) weeks, the Philippine Embassy is urging Filipinos in Singapore to immediately check the validity of their passports and to apply for the new MRP at the embassy at least two months before the expiration of their passports.

Better Security Features and Advantages

The MRP complies with international standards and helps safeguard the integrity of the Philippine passport. It contains new security features, such as holographic and micro-printing technology, that will help prevent the tampering of the personal details of the passport holder through data or photo manipulation or substitution.

Philippine Ambassador to Singapore Belen Fule-Anota expects the MRP to boost the integrity of the Philippine passport.

‘We expect the new passport to substantially lower the incidence of passport data and photo tampering and restore the integrity of the Philippine passport as a travel document,’ the lady envoy said.

The lady ambassador added that the MRP will facilitate the travel of Filipinos overseas as it is easier and faster for immigration officials to scrutinize digitally.

‘The MRP, because of its added security features and reliability, will make overseas travel for Filipinos more convenient and stress-free,’ she said.

Passport Fee, Requirements, Validity

Despite having more security features and more pages–44 compared to 36 pages for the old green one—there will be no increase in the passport fee.

All passport requirements will remain the same except that the applicant will be required to personally appear and submit three (3) passport-size photos (4.5×3.5 cm), which should have a royal blue (instead of the usual white) matte background.

Like the green passport, the MRP will be valid for five (5) years. All regular green passports earlier issued will remain valid and will be honored by immigration authorities worldwide until their stated expiry date.

Processing Time

The Embassy can no longer accommodate requests for the early release of passports. Since the new passport will be printed and produced at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila,  processing time will take six (6) weeks from the time the application is submitted to the time it will be ready for pick-up. All MRP applications will have to be sent to Manila by courier, after which the DFA will send the finished passports back to the Embassy in Singapore.

Applicants who wish to renew their passports after 31 May 2008 are advised to submit their applications at least two months before their passport’s expiration, scheduled travel or before the expiration of their employment permit/pass or visa, to avoid inconvenience.

‘To avoid inconvenience, I strongly advise Singapore-based Filipinos to apply for the MRP earlier and not to wait until the last day of their passport validity,’ stressed Ambassador Anota.

PSG Badminton Club celebrates 1st Year Anniversary

Filed under: Group Activities — admin @ 12:00 am

by speedbiker

It was one hot summer of May 26, 2007, as the Filipino badminton players trickled in at Clementi Sports Hall. Everyone was excited and were all enthusiastic to meet their fellow Pinoys in Singapore. It was more of a Filipino Day than a normal badminton schedule as there were 60 Pinoys arrived that day with their badminton uniforms and rackets.

That was how PSG Badminton Club was born……

With the overwhelming attendance of players, a group of professionals decided to organized the PinoySG Badminton Club. These group initially called themselves as BADHEADZ which was supported then by BADGURLZ (Badminton Girls) who took charge of all the logistics needs.

The name Badheadz will then lived on as one year passes by, in which PSG Badminton Club has successfully hosted 3 tournaments in its one year of existence. These are, PinoySG Badminton Club Tournament, PinoySG Dual Meet in cooperation with Team Lagalag and PinoySG Badminton Open 2008.

I have seen the efforts of every “badheadz” (badminton heads) that has guided this organization. I have seen them burn candles at night to finish every task that is needed to be done for the success of every event that it hosted. I have seen some tears of joy, of fatigue and stress, but the efforts they shared were priceless.

I have seen also smiles beneath empty eyes…Filipino badminton enthusiast and players who has spent their time with the club every weekend. Some have lead on…some pursued…others gave up…others stopped….but more continued to blaze the passion…..more played on to enjoy badminton.

As of this date, there are 197 registered members of PinoySG Badminton Club and a myriad of regular guest players. Average attendance on weekly schedule usually reaches maximum 65 players in which 4 to 6 courts were reserved and 20 to 24 hour slots are booked to accommodate the members.

{mosgoogle left}The PSG Badminton Weekly game schedule is one of the most attended and popular Filipino weekly event of PinoySG.com aside from the Friday Coffee EB hosted by PSG moderators.

ON JUNE 7, 2008, SATURDAY…12 NOON………..

PinoySG Badminton club will celebrate its 1st year anniversary at SELETARIS CONDOMINIUM.

A food buffet will be served for everyone. There will be fun games and outdoor contest in line, as tennis court and videoke room were reserved for this event.

PSG Warfreakz captures 3rd runner up spot at SX 3vs 3 Paintball, Johor Bahru Malaysia

Filed under: Group Activities — admin @ 12:00 am

{mosgoogle left}My knees were swollen, sweat drips continously from my forehead as my team mates Marcus (Nabelrock), Allan (Blade) and Albert (Exhopek) discussed all possible strategies for our last game. This is it……our last game or we go back to Singapore empty handed which will surely disappoint the warfreakz members who were expecting us to bring home a trophy.

The plan was finalized and we were not even confident if it will work considering the field layout which is really not viable for a forward rush attack. We discussed again and again, and decided to do the kamikaze attack all for the purpose of having fun. The strategy which surprised the whole crowd that day will soon to be known as the Blade Attack.

The audience were astonished, including the referees and our opponents, as we executed the 20 second rush attack in a blaze. Everyone was speechless as Allan(Blade) shot at close range two opponents and we finished the last man in a letter V offense position.

It was indeed a very coordinated attack and it was the fastest 3 vs 3 game they have witnessed. And everyone said that PSG Warfreakz made a history that day at Southern Extreme Sunday Match.

We secured the 3rd runner up spot after Marcus(Nabelrock), our best shooter in the team, did a one on one face off with the other team as a tie breaker.

We did not get the top prize, but the experience exposed the flaws in our defense strategy. It also allow us to learn what areas we need to improve when it comes to offensive tactics.

There were 15 teams that participated in the tournament, and most of them has Division 3 players on their teams. Division 3 players are the more senior players which has years of experience in the tournaments and more skilled when it comes to paintball technics.

It was fun indeed, as we proudly display our Philippine flag during the awarding. Another event where the two teams of PSG Warfreakz showed to our Malaysian counterpart what is camaraderie and kind of fighting spirit we have.

PSG Warfreakz Bravo team composed of Franiboy, Archers, Wakoko and NaughtyIan fought valiantly but was beaten by more experienced players on field.

Our efforts are all dedicated to the guys and ladies of PSG Warfreakz. Keep playing and enjoy the game!

LABOR DAY MESSAGE OF SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

Filed under: Embassy Press Releases — admin @ 9:13 pm

LABOR DAY MESSAGE OF DR. ALBERTO G. ROMULO
SECRETARY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS
01 MAY 2008

{mosgoogle left}The Filipino nation is built on the hard work and ingenuity of our greatest strength – our people.

There is no limit to what our citizens can accomplish when they have the skills to compete and the freedom and drive to achieve their dreams. Through vision and determination, Filipino workers are transforming their communities, strengthening our economy, and realizing the great promise of our country.

The soul and sinew of Philippine labor must continue to be a driving force for national progress and productivity. The continuing vitality of our economy and, through it, of our entire way of life, rests in large measure on education and training, partnership between labor and management, and responsibility by all for improving the quality of the goods and services we produce.

As we celebrate Labor Day, we pay tribute to the generations of men and women who through their untiring energy, excellent work ethics, and steadfast commitment, significantly contribute to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our nation.

Today, we likewise give thanks to those who continually strive to improve working conditions and create fair labor laws.

We recognize the role of organized labor unions in achieving gains for our workers in the past years. Whatever benefits our workers enjoy today are due, to a large extent, to these unions who keep watch over workers’ basic rights and therefore bring dignity to the workplace and integrity to society.

As we express our deep appreciation for the many contributions of the Filipino worker, we, the men and women of the Department of Foreign Affairs renew and reaffirm our firm resolve to promote the interests and safety, and protect the rights of Filipinos overseas.

We rededicate ourselves to the global effort to uphold worker’s rights and welfare – in the ratification of international conventions; a proactive approach to addressing migrant labor concerns; constant monitoring of possible crisis situations, the continuous improvement of our consular services, and the vigorous pursuit of bilateral, regional, and multilateral initiatives on labor and migration.

In partnership with concerned stakeholders, we will continue to face and address current challenges with the aim of improving the lives of Filipino workers who are, without a doubt, our country’s greatest resource.

Mabuhay ang manggagawang Pilipino!

PinoySG’ers conquered Gunung Hantu Besar

Filed under: Group Activities — admin @ 12:00 am

April 26, 2008 – by SilverChair

Wuhooo!!! We did it! We survived the forest, everyone is bleeding but in one piece! Great job team!

Alas! We reached the peak of the mountain – Gunung Hantu Besar dwarves nearby mountain ridges. Nice view! This makes every ache you are feeling worthwhile. We are so overwhelmed and so proud that our group made it to the top.

Alright people, we got to get going! The rain might start anytime soon… and so we rushedly set up our tents. The summit is cramped though; Malaysian government officials are surveying the peak…and take note, we witnessed the historical dismantling of the steel tower built a century ago. Nice timing again!

Two hours ago, we had reached the first base camp, Orchid. Setting up camp at the peak, our guide said, is dangerous. A steel tower is vulnerable to lightning and we might get hit as well. I’m thinking, “The Flash” was hit by lightning isn’t he?! We like to take our chances to become superheroes… We talked and negotiated our way to the guide for us to spend the night at the peak. Our “senior climber”, JB, reiterated that the group will never be satisfied until we reached summit. Seeing our “serious and grim faces”, our guide balked and let us continue.

Back at the summit, Tere lead the group preparing our end-of-day-food and chopsuey as our main course. JB, the “rice master”, again showed his expertise. Curious faces surrounded us while preparing our dinner. The Malaysians watched us and mumbled “Sila almeprahatyan, barang barang anda…whatever! By their looks, they childishly compared their just-opened-sardine-in-can to our hot and steaming chopsuey!

At the peak of Gunung Hantu Besar, the Big Ghost Mountain as they call it, the usual fog is not around and by that, we could see what was below us. Seremban and nearby Kuala Lumpur city lights also illuminated the evening sky. The Petronas tower is also recognizable by the two high structures soaring the capital city.

After a while, we do what Pinoy does best, celebrate! You can tell that everyone’s spirit was uplifted, that’s just what the peak of a mountain does to you. Aside from layered clothing, the group found other ways to keep warm – vodka and tequila!

As what the mountain is called, the group shared their ghost stories – from Stab’s witch to suicides at the MRT rails. Our new recruits – Shundel, PinoySAP and Albert also introduced themselves and shared their climbing histories back in our country.

Past 2 hours from midnight, it’s time to get our much needed sleep…. Ngooorkkk! What the?! Someone is… but my body need some…rest… and slee-…

6 AM! I have seen the sun rise from numerous places back in the Philippines, but let me tell you, to see it from a peak sends a certain chill up your spine! You suddenly feel all these different emotions, and then you think this in hindsight, climbing a mountain can be contradictory, with the hardships come accompanying joy. From this peak, on a clear day, you can see all of Seremban and the mountain ridges that surround it.

Shortly after, other groups came. They had stayed overnight in Camp Orchid and settled on reaching the peak this morning. They must be the forty or so people our guide told us yesterday. The peak is cramped! We hurriedly disassembled our tent to accommodate us all. While doing so, we heard – Kabayan! The newly arrived group has Filipinos as well.

Pose here and pose there! After hundreds of picture-taking and “jump-posing” (the Malaysians actually enjoyed mimicking us), it’s time to descend. We geared up ourselves so that those hungry leeches can no more feast on our bodies. It’s good our bags are less heavy compared yesterday. Foods and drinks were already consumed and emptied.

Being able to see where we needed to get to from the top of the mountain was a great motivator for all of us – a 100 meter falls! After a couple of hours, we heard the strong gush of water, this is it! My feet are already shaking… and a man made steel stair is between me and the waterfalls! Need to be careful though, I told myself, I don’t want to end this hike falling on these corroded steps. I took the luxury of time checking and counting those steps. It’s like “Step, No!” game checking whether I’ll fall or not… Step, No…Four hundred twenty eight… Step, No…Four hundred twenty nine… Step, Tug! I’m aground! Four hundred thirty!!!

We spent our lunch near the falls with a special carbonara “specially made” again by Tere. It’s really enjoyable and fun staying below the jet of water streaming above the falls. A natural breeze of air chilled us and the pain in our bodies was all magically washed out.

We jogged our way up and downhill to the pick-up point. It’s already a concrete path but the 4×4 can’t reach this location because of the eroded road we passed the day before. We stumbled again to the word-of-the-day, T!T!. We were shaken yesterday seeing road signs stating “T!T! 3 kilometers ahead…” Our guide explained that it’s a Malay word for wooden bridge. Wheeew… Along the way, the rain started to drop.

The gang settled behind the back of the 4×4. It’s raining but, well, we were already wet. Along the rugged terrain, Gits took out the Tequila from his bag. Good timing! We ought to celebrate! Tagayan na! A nearly full bottle of Tequila is consumed in just a few minutes. Is it the raindrop as chaser that made it possible? Haahaha!!! Hell no… It’s the thirst of rejoice, happiness and fête.

We have conquered a tough challenge together. This group started climbing this mountain as friends, and we went down as family.

Tere, Dez, Gits, Jungle Boy, Stabilo Boss, Shundl, PinoySAPBasis, Albert85, Silverchair_13 -> the lucky 9!
